Sonya Johnson brings both personal and professional insight to her role on the GRASP Board. A person in long-term recovery, Sonya has transformed her lived experience with addiction and the justice system into a powerful force for change in her community.

She currently serves as the Adult Peer Programs Supervisor at NAMI Sarasota and Manatee Counties, where she oversees multiple peer-led initiatives including the Overdose Prevention and Education Program (OPEP) and the Parents for Parents Program (P4P). In this role, she provides strategic guidance and programmatic oversight, championing trauma-informed practices, recovery-oriented systems of care, and equitable support for families navigating complex systems.

Sonya’s leadership and advocacy have been recognized with multiple accolades, including the 2024 Child Welfare Professional of the Year for Lived Experience and a feature in Sarasota Magazine for her work inspiring systemic change. She is also a respected speaker, trainer, and mentor, known for building bridges between agencies, families, and individuals in recovery.

Through her work with GRASP, Sonya is committed to ensuring that people reentering society from incarceration or treatment have access to dignity, opportunity, and support. She believes in second chances because she’s lived one—and now devotes her life to helping others find theirs.
